about

It’s a pleasure to bring a new album of solo swarsangum music to you.

Swarsangum Collected brings together various improvisations over the last two years.

Beginning with the bright, spring-time expression of The Pillars of Paraiba Part II, we dive into an extended piece where I play the swasangum and a xylophone live with some simple effects. Much like Part I (from Swarsangum Live), Part II continues playing with space, allowing timbres to expand and detract. At two distinct parts of the piece the micro and macro sound worlds of the swarsangum are explored with a very long delay. Like a players breath and the seasons that surround them, it rises and falls.

Short and impactful, The Eye opens with a striking bowing of the bass notes on the instrument, before delving into a slower reflective mood. The sombre tenderness of this improvisation offers a soft space to watch the world speed by.

Light Through Settling Dust explores a new sonic world with the swarsangum. Putting the instrument through a simple effects pedal, I found this evocative treatment of the instrument’s sound. It brings a sense of formality and nobility to the piece, as if trying to excite an Empress in a stiff and docile court.

Red Wood brings us back around to the bright spring-time feel of where we began, but the playing style is slower and more considered. As the season begins to change, so may we reflect momentarily on what it has brought and bestowed.

Swarsangum Collected is being sold physically at live events as a postcard, with the artwork beautifully printed and packed with a download code.

If purchasing the Artcard from Bandcamp, you'll receive a link to download the album in full.
